Recently I was so lucky to get the sewing box of my mother-in-law. She died a year after I met her son. I didn’t get to know her very well. But I know that she was a very nice, friendly and outgoing person. I feel very honoured to have her sewing supplies, I think I get to know her better through it.
The box was filled to the brim with sewing thread, zippers, buttons and various odds and ends. I am sure I will use a lot of it in the future. There were some odd things in there too but I’ll get to those later.
Look at this supply of push buttons and hooks. Quite an international collection don’t you think. There are cards from China, France, Germany and England.
I probably won’t have to go out to get some sewing thread anytime soon, because she had a lot of good quality colourful threads in there. There were also these old wooden ‘klosjes’ (figure that one out for yourself in English), with button-hole thread. I didn’t even know that existed but it is a very strong quality thread. I’ll have to figure out where I can use that for.
There also was this nice old green tin. I filled it with all the cartons with seewing needles that I found. It is now filled to the brim with needles. I guess they will last me a lifetime (or three). I have no idea where she got this box. As far as I know she never went to England. The only foreign countries she saw were Belgium and Germany, and then only because they are only 30 minutes away.
Speeking of needles. Look at this carton box. It is overflowing with old sewing-machine-needles. There most be at least 200 of them. I really can’t imagine why she would have over 200 machine-needles. But if any of you ladies out there needs a new needle for your machine let me know, and I will send some over to you. Or if you have an idea how to use them in some creative, crafty way, just tell me, I’m up for it.
Finally I found this nice piece of lace. I think it was meant to go on a collar. I’m sure I’m gonna use this, I just don’t know how yet (but I bet I won’t be sewing it to a collar, that is a bit to vintage looking for me).
