Thrifting at the in-laws. Part III The big stuff

Studio library cupboard
We are back home, the laundry is done (ha I wish) and I am ready for some serious blogging. So get ready for lots of photo’s from my holiday in France and from various past, present and future projects (I still have two weeks before I have to go to work so I hope to get a lot done).

But first I am going to participate in another round of Rhoda’s Thrifting Treasures party, because it is way to much fun not to.
Here is the third and final episode in my series of thrifting at the in-laws. Here are some of the bigger pieces we took home with us. And ladies please help me out! I am in desperate need of advice on what to do with some of these old, precious (but probably not really valuable) pieces.

Studio library cupboard

The first pieces of furniture I want to show you are part of my new craft studio. I love this old library cupboard. It has 12 small but very deep drawers that can hold surprisingly much. I have temporarily labeled them so I don’t forget what I put in each drawer but eventually I will make proper tags. As you can see it has a lovely wood coloring but there is quite a lot of damage as well so I am contemplating painting it white. What do you think?
Goed idee?

Studio writingdesk

This is my new, old little writing desk. Here is where my laptop lives and where I write to you ladies (and men?). It is also the place I do most of my paper crafting. Again, the wood is beautiful or should I say was beautiful once, because its age is really showing. Would this look better in white too? I think so, but I find it difficult to paint these old pieces of furniture.

Studio file cabinet

I have already shown this filing cabinet once. It has all these small drawers that you can pull out and it is the perfect size for scrapbookpaper. Here is another look, when it is closed.

Studio File cabinet2

My craft room is up in the attic and because of the roof I have barely any straight walls where I can put a cupboard of some height. That is why I have this cupboard in the hallway outside of the attic (perfect excuse to take over the whole floor).

Ok, now that we are outside of my studio anyway, lets go downstairs to the living room.

Livingroom small cupboard

This little china cabinet is definitely going to get a makeover. And it won’t be much of a surprise that it is going to be white.
(Oh by the way I do realize that there is a bit too much of the his and her style of decorating going on there on top of the cabinet. But this corner, with the new addition is still in a transit phase, it will get better I promise. Oh and by the way 2, if you do take a closer look at this picture, please ignore the dust bunnies, I am still in vacation mood, I am sure you will understand (I hope).

Army trunk

I just love this old army trunk. I will give it a whitewash and make a cushion for it. Because it is going to go outside on the terrace ( the part that has a little roof) and double as a bench and as storage for our patio chair covers and pillows.

Army trunk detail

Here is a peak inside, you can see which army division liberated my city back in 1944. My father-in-law worked his whole life in the same building that started as a monastery, during the war, the Germans made it into one of their headquarters and after them the allied forces made it a hospital. After the war, the monks moved back in, and they later sold the building (with my father-in-law as part of the deal) to the University. We found parts and reminders of all of those periods in the house.

Garden bench We have adopted another piece of garden furniture. This lovely bench first needs a new seat, because the old beams are really rotting away. After that it will get painted, can you guess what color? Ha, white of course! It is going in the front garden, which is mainly a shadow garden so I experiment with only white flowers there.

Garden bench ironwork
I am sure this lovely bench, painted all white will really liven up that dark garden and will hear some nice neighborly chitchat.

Ok and before you think we took all the furniture with us. Take a look at this bench.

02 marktplaats_001

We brought it home, to try it as a wall bench in our hallway, but it didn’t work so it has been sold allready (really quickly, never thought uncomfortable church benches could be so popular).

I hope you enjoyed my series of thrifting at the in-laws. I had a lot of fun showing you my new old treasures. Stick around to see them being used in all kinds of projects. And please ladies, tell me would you paint the desk and cupboard with drawers that I showed you? Please leave me a comment with some advice on to paint or not to paint…….?
Schilderen? of Niet Schilderen?

I love seeing the wooden furniture, it's so refreshing as EVERYONE at the moment seems to be painting things white and it's such a shame. I love to see the age of the wood and contemplate who else has used the furniture. It gives it real character. I love those drawers as they are and the desk. I think if they were mine I wouldn't be able to bring myself to paint them! :-)

So many wonderful things, I don't know where to start!! I love that little china cabinet so much! That filing cabinet is really nice, so much better than those ugly metal ones! And I need one of those library cabinets. Maybe then I can finally get organized!

Beautiful pieces!!! Just your library cabinet alone would make a great post for my "Decorating Dilemmas" party. You could do a poll to see how many people think you should paint it, stain it, or leave it be. :) Thanks for visiting!

  21. Love the little china cabinet and the army trunk. Is the damage to the library card cabinet so substantial that you have to paint it? I like its stained color now. But, I think a light wash will give the trunk a new fresh look.

I love the trunk and the history is awesome it will be fab with a big cushion on the top. I know you'll do a gorgeous job of it!

Oh ,my what beautiful pieces of furniture! I wouldn't paint the library cabinet. Just give it a good cleaning. I used linseed oil and turpentine for my old pieces. For each gallon of very hot water, I used about 1/4 cup of each. Wear rubber gloves. You will be amazed at how much dirt comes off. Then just rub it with a soft cloth. No need to rinse it. It will bring out the beautiful patina of the wood. I wouldn't paint the desk either. Love that little cabinet too. Now I would paint that white! lol Good luck!

  31. The desk looks like it it some nice wood. I would suggest getting a wood restorer and trying that first. It just might liven up that wood to where you would like it as it. If not, paint. I am not a 'never paint wood' person, unlike hubby aka Cabinet Man.
