I know I have already told you on more than one occasion that My Love and I do not share the same decorating style.
Just because it is fun, and because you might be able to help me out a bit, I thought I’d show you just how different our styles really are.
Ik heb al vaker geschreven dat ‘mijn’ en ‘zijn’ stijl in ons huis nogal ver uit elkaar liggen. Om dat te illustreren hebben we allebei een decoratie style quize gedaan. Mijn stijl wordt beschreven als country classic. Ik hou van geverfd en oud gemaakt hout, van bloemenpatronen en fijne stoffen. En ik hou ervan om oude dingen te combineren om een gezellige sfeer te creeren. Die beschrijving klopt heel aardig, toch.
We both did this Home style quiz and I am a Country Classic. This is what my description said:
“You have a naturally refined sensibility with an appreciation for tradition and history. You value beauty, craftsmanship, and family heirlooms, but you like to open things up with pretty, easy-going pieces like painted wood or distressed furniture, lovely florals and other patterns, and bunches of fresh flowers that give your home a breezy, relaxed feeling. You love unique finds, have a thrifty, creative side, and can make these things work together. You may also enjoy layering different fabrics or mixing patterns to create a cozy effect.”
Well they got that right didn’t they. This picture and the one on top of this post are very close to my ideal living room.
Now let’s move on to his style. My Love is described as an Earthy Modern.
“You keep up with culture, style, and trends, but have an appreciation for timeless forms and simple lines. You value good design, quality craftsmanship, and prefer the streamlined to the overly embellished or cluttered. Your style is grounded and solid, not flighty or frilly. You value serenity. You appreciate the beauty in simple forms. Whether fancy or plain, you appreciate things that are well made and function as well as they look. You also have a strong respect for the environment and craftsmanship.”
And this would be his dream living room. Black leather, modern design, real art, strong colors. I didn’t exaggerate, now did I? Miles apart we are.
Mijn lief komt als Modern uit te test. Hij houdt van leer en design, van strakke vormen en weinig frutsels. Ter illustratie heb ik wat foto’s van mijn en zijn stijl gezocht. Ik heb niet overdreven toch? Onze stijlen liggen echt mijlenver uit elkaar.
And just to remind you (and because I want to leave you with a beautiful picture), this is me again:
Country Living
Now if that isn’t a decorating dilemma I don’t know. But we make it work. We compromise, we give in, we ‘assign corners’ And most of all we wouldn’t want to share a home with any one else, we are meant to be together, different styles and all.
Finding ways to join his style and mine and coming up with exceptable compromises without ending up with a hodgepodge of everything is an ongoing challenge. Recently I have been working on a couple of particularly ‘good matches’. I will share them in the coming weeks, so stay tuned (or better yet, subscribe and don’t miss a thing).
De twee verschillende stijlen vormen soms echt een dilemma. En het is dan ook een voortdurende uitdaging om manieren te vinden om de twee voorkeuren mooi te combineren. Want dat staat voorop, hoe verschillend we ook zijn, er is toch niemand met wie we liever ons huis willen delen.
Ik heb een paar projecten onder handen die volgens mij wel eens hele goede voorbeelden van geslaagde combi’s kunnen worden, dus hou mijn blog in de gaten. En als jullie in de tussentijd tips hebben, hou ik me aanbevolen.

I think there ARE ways you could incorporate his style. Maybe some modern art thrown in? Or Country Classic pieces without the clutter that can accumulate??

Cracks me up! My husband and my style are very different too, but I always win-he gets to decorate the garage and I don't touch his office. So just give him a room (a small room:)

This is so the same as my husband and I! We did the "test" on Sproost.com, and everything he loved I hated!
I also am country classic, and his style is described as "Hollywood Modern"…gag!
Right now our combined decorating style is… all the stuff we have accumulated as "hand me downs" or found good deals on since getting married!
Someday I'll be able to decorate my dream home!

I know how you feel…..I swear its a man thing…..can't they see how much more restfull a pretty flroal bedroom would be!!
My Dh rarely compromises and I have had to tone down my urge to clutter, collect and re-paint old junk:(…..and yet he seems to be relenting at last….after 16 years!!

Oh, dat lijkt me wel heel moeilijk, Twee van die heel verschillende stylen. En dan zeur ik soms over de sterio installatie en tv die volgens mijn lief gezien mogen worden.
Ik houd je blog altijd al in de gaten, dus kom vanzelf tegen wat je gedaan hebt.

Oompf…hopelijk liggen jullie alleen qua interieurstijl zover uit elkaar, maar naar hetgeen wat je schrijft zit dat wel goed! 't Is voor vrouwlief met zo'n romatische inslag in haar smaak natuurlijk erg hard een man te hebben met zo'n moderne smaak, die hij naar het schijnt ook omgezet wil zien…Maar met jouw handjes voor het inrichten zal er aleen maar interessants uitkomen, ik ben in ieder geval benieuwd!

Stopping over from the decorating dilemmas party! I am right in that boat with you! Luckily for me, when I just go ahead and do stuff he says it looks nice. If we were to go out shopping for stuff together we would never be able to agree on anything (discovered this little fact while we were doing our wedding registry. Yeah, that was fun) but when I randomly bring stuff home from craigslist, he's mostly just glad he didn't have to do it!
This is the neverending battle in our home too!
What a fun post.. I like your style better than hubby(hehe).. I'm just sitting here, daydreaming.. It would be so nice to have rooms like that in my house..

Sounds like you and your husband like the same styles me and my husband do! Lucky for me, he just wants me to be happy and he is content to decorate only his computer room in his own style. He knows how important decorating is to me and claims to love all my girly stuff because it is so "me"! You've got to love a man like that!!!

I think streamlined boxes placed under or on top of the cozy country furniture could look clean and inviting (and help curb clutter). How about black and white photos as art, framed in whitewashed frames?
Good luck working with your other half – it's always a challenge to accomplish joint decorating projects around here

Jaja, lastig, lastig….maar hoe hou je alle partijen tevreden? Ik voel ook wel voor de optie: if mama aint't happy nobody ain't happy! Ik geloof niet dat wij heel veel uit elkaar liggen qua smaak, maar wij hebben hier wel totaal verschillend ingerichte kamers. Ik zei je al eerder dat ik wel van onverwachte combi's houdt en zeker niet ga voor het geijkte. Misschien is dat een idee voor jullie: de woonkamer gezamenlijk inrichten, ik begreep dat jouw lief toch ook een voorkeur heeft voor design klassiekers die zich toch heel goed met Country CLASSIC laten combineren. Focus je niet zo op de verschillen, maar zoek naar de overeenkomsten, volgens mij zijn er die meer dan je denkt! Ik dwaal af; Verder zou je kamers kunnen verdelen als het echt niet lukt, een earthy (volgens mij goed te combineren met retro vintage, zitten echt leuke dingen bij) eetkamer, een romantische slaapkamer (vindt mijn man helemaal geweldig, mijn broer vindt het een wijvenkamer!) en zo voort! Tegen de tijd dat jullie klaar zijn is jullie smaak natuurlijk veranderd!

I think my style lies somewhere in between yours and yours truly! I love the distressed and vintage look but also modren, straight lines. I am working on my living room these days trying to balance these styles. I'm glad I found your blog!
