The Painted Porch

Hi sweet things, is summer still going strong in your parts? We had summer in May and June and more or less went straight into Fall after that. No really high temps, lot’s of rain, windstorms and very unpredictable weather.

Good thing we have our roofed terrace now, so that we can still get a fix of ‘outdoor-living’ even when it is raining.

I have loved our backyard porch to death ever since it was finished, except for the week it took us to paint it.

 

 

You see those little windows seemed such a good idea when I came up with the plans and design for our roof. And I just fleetingly thought about maintenance. Washing them is of course a big nuisance, but I had totally underestimated painting them.

 

 

There are over 100 tiny windows in there, that had to be painted inside and out, and twice. All in all I painted over 2000 little stretches of wood next to glass, while on a ladder…..

Stuff they make nightmares out of….

Except I didn’t really hate it, in fact I quite enjoyed it! Crazy he.

I decided real quick that taping all of those little windows, would be a disaster in the making. So I freehanded them, all of them.

And they turned out much better than I could ever hope for.

I got a great kick out of mastering that. I felt like a pro, and with each window my confidence grew. And now I don’t think I’ll ever tape a window off again.

 

 

While I was standing with my nose an inch away from the windows (had to get up close there people), my Love was totally in over his head…..

As in: he was painting the roof and the really high bits I couldn’t possibly reach. That was hard work. And the benefit of this arrangement was not only that we got the roof finished, but my Love developed quite impressive shoulder muscles too (gotta love the extra benefits of a hardworking man ).

I love how the crisp white wood looks against our greige walls.

 

 

The outer woodwork of our kitchen door and French doors were previously yellow-ish. I wasn’t that happy about that color anymore to begin with, but seeing it now against the greige and in contrast to the white, made me want to change it presto.

So after we finished painting the porch we moved straight on to the doors.

 

 

This kitchen door is the most frequently used door in our house. We use our bikes much more often than our car, so we enter the house from the back all the time. As you can see in the only proper before picture I took, the kitchen door itself is wood and yellow, and over it is a plastic white window. Ugly as hell, but still going strong.

So I simply applied a special primer to that window and then painted it along with the rest of the door.

 

 

It totally blends in now and you can’t even tell the difference between the wood and the plastic anymore.

I am happy every time I see this door now

(it is very easy to make me happy….)

 

 

We love sitting on our porch now, and that heater has proven it’s worth too already. That wooden wall you see there on the left will be removed too, as soon as we have decided on what to do with the new one. We are contemplating closing that wall up to the little windows, because there is still some rain coming in there.

 

 

I really could stump myself for not taking any proper before, and during pictures. But I guess I just wanted the job to be finished. I still have a lot of windows to paint, since I plan on eradicating all of the yellow inside too. So if there are enough people interested I might give making a video of how I do it, a try. Mind you I have never made a video yet, let alone expose you to my freaky English accent. But just say the word and I’ll aim to please.
