Inspiration File: Vintage Laundry Room

I am quite obsessed by this vintage laundry room I found in a library book (so I have to give the book back).

I adore the colors, the vintage apothecary cabinet, the buckets, the bottles, the light!

Laundry Room with Vintage Elements

My laundry area is in the dungeon we call basement. Just crumbling walls, mold, pipes and spider webs downstairs. We don’t have space for a laundry room. Most European houses don’t have laundry rooms, in fact I never even heard of them before I started blogging. Anyway, I don’t see a laundry room in my future, let allone one as pretty as this one. But one can dream…..

The image was found in the book: Storage Solutions by Margaret Sabo Wills. And as far as I could gather it is an image from Pottery Barn (book?)  made by Stefano Massei. I looked everywhere online for it. But couldn’t find it. If any of you have more or better pics of this, let me know.

UPDATE

Thanks to the kind and sweet and talented LuLuSparkles it is confirmed that the image was originally published in a Pottery Barn book called Storage & Display

  1. My washer and dryer is in the hall closet, the dryer atop the washer. I just wish I had that much room for doing laundry!

Yeah me too! And I do realize that having a washing machine at all, is more than 75% of the people on this earth have. So I am not complaining. Just dreaming…

  2. I didn’t know that many European homes do not have laundry areas/rooms. We have a laundry room upstairs near our bedrooms. Very convenient and now I won’t complain that it is on the small side.

    • Marianne@Songbird says:

Nope, there are lots of things European homes don’t have that I frequently see in American homes. Maybe I should do a post about that one day.

  3. What I wouldn’t give for a bigger laundry room! I also wish my laundry room was on the second floor (like some newer homes) because that’s where the majority of laundry is generated. Maybe, my next home?

    • Marianne@Songbird says:

      Yes maybe…
Join me in dreaming about beautiful and light laundry rooms exactly where we want them. Maybe the universe will listen to our dreams… We can have hope… ;-)

  4. I love it! Today I found some antique glass bottles that I plan on using for my wedding. There’s such charm about antiques!!!!!

  5. My “laundry room” is a wide closet in the bathroom on the main floor. It has 2 bi-fold doors so you can hide it away when you want to. I’d love a full room, but I’m at least happy to have the washer and dryer be on the main floor instead of the basement. That picture is lovely, though!

Most people have the washing machine in the bathroom here too. I actually already found it an improvement to have it out of there, when we moved to this house where the machine is hooked up in the basement. Of course that means a lot of schlepping with full baskets. But he, I am saving on a gym subscription, I get the step work-out at home :-)

  6. where I am now in suburbia my laundry is a concrete slab for the washing machine and a concrete laundry trough under my house. When it rains I have to wade through mud to get to my raised slab. Our house up the coast where I am permanently moving to next year has a luscious, spacious light airy room which I looove!
    This laundry room looks great!

Hmm that doesn’t sound good. But at least you have a beautiful laundry room in your future. I am sure you are going to love it so much!

  7. Hi Marianne~

That laundry room IS beautiful, I agree! And I hear you on wanting a real laundry room! :) Many of the 1960′s ramblers {one stories} such as ours is, have the laundry room in the garage…not exactly the most inspiring place to do laundry, more get in and out as quickly as possible! :) Can you imagine how wonderful doing laundry would be in the room in your photo? Just lovely! Thank you for sharing. :)

I hope you have a beautiful day!

    Blessings,
    Jenni

      Hi Jenni,
Garages, basements or bathrooms are the rooms of choice here to put the whole washer/ dryer thing in. And no I can’t imagine a laundry room as beautiful as that. I think I would start to wash my clean clothes then :-)

  8. We are really lucky to have a laundry room in our little apartment… well, it’s really sortof a laundry room/pantry/storage room but I’m SO happy not to have to have my washing machine in the kitchen or bathroom.

  9. I love this vintage laundry room too and am chomping at the bit to re-do mine. I just painted an antique ironing board turquoise and it will be my inspiration. Thanks for sharing. Love your website. Patti
