Good evening ladies, can you imagine it is already September? Wow time sure does fly. Last week I offered you the chance to win this über beautiful book Belle Blanc. As I mentioned it isn’t exactly 100% my style, so I got some questions whether I REALLY like the book. Well yes I do!! So don’t you worry I am not giving away my own copy, no sirree that one is not leaving my house. I am giving away a brand new copy to be delivered to your home via my favorite book store BookDepository.
So why do I love this book so much, even if the romantic French Nordic style that is so predominant in the book isn’t exactly my own style?
And why do I think you might love this book?
First up I don’t think you have to be fully in love with a style to be able to appreciate the beauty in another style. I mean come on, I love the farmhouse country style in books and magazines. And no my house doesn’t look anything like a farm, nor will I likely ever decorate it as if it was. But I can appreciate the hominess that is oozing from those romantic country living images. And I can let them inspire me to make sure my house feels as much as a HOME as possible.
The same with this book. It peeked my interest because of the subtitle “For the Love of White”. Well if you have been here anytime before, you know I LOVE WHITE, with a grand passion. Well white is definitely aptly called Belle Blanc (=beautiful white) in this book. Mirjana Schnepf and Bianca Aurich really show off the white wide range of colors that we all simply call White.
I think we really need a lot more words to describe white. There is bright white, and muted white, white with a grey, pink or yellow undertone, new and old white and daylight and night time white. I think there is a white for everybody and for every occasion.
The rooms in Belle Blanc are mainly decorated in soft muted colors. But it isn’t hard to imagine from the pictures how instantly the mood and character of the rooms would change with just the addition of some stronger colors.
So Mirjana and Bianca themselves might prefer this softer look, they certainly show of the houses in such a way that is easy to see how one could adapt that look in your own home.
The book moves us from the front door and hallway, through the living room and kitchen and up landings, bath rooms and bed rooms, and says goodbye to us outside in the garden. There are even some yummy and beautifully photographed recipes in there. And where they start with some tips on white paint and restyling old furniture it ends with tips on what roses to grow for the best romantic bouquets. Really you get a full package.
One of the big plusses for me about this book is that this are real homes. Sure they are styled out to the max for the pictures (not a mismatched color in sight), but still, these are homes where families live and thrive. So it all is doable, achievable and realistic. I am sure that on any given Monday these houses will not look like in the pictures, they will have dirty laundry on the floor, dirty dishes in the sink and a gazillion electronic toys strewn all over the living room. And yet the bones of these houses are good. I am sure that even with the everyday mess that a family brings these rooms still look inviting (something I am not so sure about with all the oh so stylishly empty modern design houses).
So is Belle Blanc for you if you do not have this thing for white? I think so.
Will you love it if your style is less romantic and more modern? I think so too.
If you love decorating, and looking at beautifully decorated houses as much as I do. You will love the book. The pages and pages full of stunning photography will simply inspire you to make the best of your home. And that is as much as we can ask of any decorating book.
