How to see missing updates in your Facebook feed

Are you like me? Are you using Facebook as a way to stay in touch with your favorite blogs and bloggers? Have you been relying on your FB feed  to catch the latest updates too? Have you noticed that some of the pages you used to follow don’t ever appear in your feed anymore? Have you wondered whether they have stopped using FB?

FB tutorial add pages to lists and receive their feed

Guess what! Facebook has changed the rules on us AGAIN. Last year FB started to presume they knew better than we what we wanted to read and started showing us ‘most popular’ updates. No one of course could ever determine how FB decided what a popular update was, and how in the heck any update could become popular if it wasn’t shown to readers.

Last month FB went one up on us. They changed the  algorithm (or in FB terms the edgerank thingy) again, and now updates from ‘businesses’ (=pages) hardly ever show up in anyone’s feeds anymore, unless the owner of that business starts paying for promotion.

Facebook and money image

I guess Zuckerman and his cronies are not making enough money. So after first telling us “bloggers” that we had to create business pages in order to be able to promote our personal blogs, they are now trying to force us to use FB as a paid service.

Well I am seriously ticked off. FB listen up:

“I know which pages I want to read; I know what updates I want to receive! I am a grown woman and I don’t need you to determine what I can or cannot read on FB!!! got it.”

Well if you feel the same. I have found a way to beat FB at their own game.

Make lists!

FB tutorial add pages to lists and receive their feed

FB allows you to make lists of friends or pages. And the beauty is that when you have included a friend or a page in your list you get all the updates in the order that they have been published!!! No more preselections by FB.

If you like a page – as in I want to see this page in my feed – there is no garantuee that FB will ever serve the updates of that page in your feed. Especially when it is a smaller page that doesn’t stand a chance to measure up to the ‘popular’ criterium.

But if after liking the  page you ad it to your list, you will always catch the updates!!!

Making lists is easy and so handy. I have now organized my FB reading by categories. I have made a list of photography pages I follow, DIY blogs, recipe blogs, wise gurus, personal friends and family, bloggy friends etc.

It kind of organises my FB reading too, which I love.

So how do you make listst. It is quite easy!

The wonderful Amy from Living Locurto wrote a wonderful tutorial so I am not going to repeat that. It is especially useful to ad a new Like to a list.

Click here for Living Locurto How to make FB lists tutorial

However, I have already liked a whole lot of pages, and going trough them one by one to hover over that like button seemed a daunting task.
Besides I can’t always get the “ad to list” line to show up when I hover over the Like button.

So this is how I ad multiple friends/ pages to my FB list.

First create your lists (as I said I organized my FB stuff, and made multiple lists).

Hover over  FRIENDS in your left sidebar until the MORE text appears. Click it

You will see a screen with on top a button  +Create list. Click it and the following pop-up appears.

Give your list a name and click create.

Now you will see that list in your left sidebar. Click it. It will open to a page with your list (with nothing in it) and on the right you have the menu option Manage list. Open it and choose Edit list.

The next popup lets you choose if you want to ad friends or pages to your list.

I choose pages and ALL the pages you have liked so far will appear. Simply put a check mark to every page you want to include in your list.

Done!

Now if you browse FB and you go to a list. You will see each and every update and activity of the pages/friends you have put in that list.

You can choose which kind of activities of your friends or pages are shown in the list (so you can exclude game updates for example).

In the manage list menu, there is also un option “UPDATES TO SHOW”. Simply unclick the kind of updates you don’t want to see.

Done!!

Now enjoy tricking FB and following ALL  of your friends and pages feeds again.

So may I suggest you make a list or two….

And may I suggest you add my SONGBIRD FB page to your FB love list……

Let us Bloggers unite and beat FB at their own game….

  1. Great idea, Marianne. I’ve been seriously ticked off that so many of the posts I really want to read don’t show up. Technology – good but frustrating!

Yes indeed, without technology I wouldn’t be ‘talking’ to you, but oh how frustrating. Especially when the people behind the technology presume that they have to think for us.

  3. Awesome, Marianne! Thank you so much for figuring this out/putting it together and sharing! Looks simple enough! Adding this to my ‘to-do’ list for sure and sharing!

  4. Sweet! I’m so annoyed with FB for constantly changing things. Every couple months I have to figure out a new system. Thanks for doing the leg work!

  5. I just used your tutorial and did this! Oh my gosh, I might actually enjoy facebook again. Thank you so much!

I was so ticked off at not catching any updates that I did some digging to find a remedy. Glad it will help you out too.

  9. Thanks so much for sharing this. My page has seen better days since the changes of Facebook and I really miss all of my fans that used to pop in when they saw my daily posts. If you haven’t checked out my page.. come say hi!! Cheers Mr.CBB

  10. I saw a link to your post shared on FB. This is a good way to manage your personal page. I like to “use page as” for my business page, and can like pages from my page. There doesn’t seem to be a way to make a list from your business page as far as I can see. It’s when I’m using FB as my page that I don’t see loads of posts by pages I have liked. Any thoughts?

  11. Thank You so very much for your help and info! Will try to do it – ;-}
