I sincerely and humbly apologize {feedburner woes}

Sweet lady friends of mine. I am here on my knees today. I am asking for understanding and forgiveness and I have a sincere and deeply felt apology to offer.

If you happen to be one of the people that follow my through a Reader (like Google Reader for example), the last week you will have seen this in my feed:

feed message feedburner leaving

I know it is a major nuisance that I am all asking you to re-subscribe to my feed and I so wish I didn’t have to do this. I am praying daily that I am not going to lose the majority of you my faithful and very much loved readers.

But is was time to get this thing sorted, so I took a deep breath and took the plunge.

You see I really had no clue what I was doing when I started blogging. And just followed along the path, taking several detours along the way. Like most people I started using feedburner to serve up my feed to RSS readers. I thought you had to, everyone else seemed to do it.

But then I changed my name from a Dutch name to an English one. Which meant a name change and necessitated a feedburner redirect. Then I moved that blogspot name to my own domain, which needed another Feedburner redirect. Than I moved from blogspot to WordPress and took the opportunity to ditch my crappy blog name ones more. Yet another redirect…..

I had stuffed so many versions of myself my blog in the feedburner feed it was making my dizzy.

I have subscribed myself to every version of my blog throughout the years. So I could see that one or the other redirect was always given me trouble.

And Feedburner is not exactly known for its customer service…… In fact it does not exist. When something gets broken you are stranded without any help in sight…..

And then there were signs popping up everywhere that Google was preparing to completely abandon Feedburner any day in the future and I thought, what the heck.

Let’s get this mess sorted out once and for all and be done with it.

So I moved my feed to Feedblitz. And I moved my email list to Mailchimp. I am loving both services so far. Customer support does not only exist, it is actually alive and responds back. Amazing!

And I have complete control over my feed now. I can customize it, I can take it with me if I want to and I can keep it safe myself. I am in the drivers seat again…..

Now I only have to make sure that you, my dear readers, are coming along for the ride too.

So please, I am begging you if you haven’t updated your feed please do!

(email subscribers are fine, it is just the Reader readers that need to take action).

Please take the plunge with me…..

If you use any reader (for example Google Reader) and you see the message on top you will have to resubscribe. You can do this by:

either directly inserting this address in the subscribe box:  http://www.songbirdblog.com/feed

Or by clicking the RSS button  below and then on the new page clicking the orange RSS button and subscribing with your reader of choice.

RSS Button

If you use Blogger to follow blogs  in your sidebar, you can update your subscription in your Layout dashboard. Just add my URL: www.songbirdblog.com into the box that pops up when you click add to list.

update your blogger blog roll

If you have used the followers gadget in my sidebar and read my blog through Bloggers dashboard I think your only option is to (unfollow and) refollow.

I am so sorry this is such a nuisance, but it will only take you 30 seconds and then you will never miss an update again and you will earn my undying gratitude and I will love you forever!!!!!!!!

  1. I’ll be sure to resubscribe. You are one of my favorite blogs and I wouldn’t want to miss a post. Blogging does come with some issues and maintenance, which is just part of the growing pains.

Oh you are so sweet. Thank you so much. I hate having to do this and I am so afraid I’ll lose a ton of readers over this.
Ah well we’ll just have to see.

  2. I did it, you know, what you said up there! Love you Marianne! I’d find you somehow cuz I’d go looking for you…believe me I’d notice if I wasn’t reading Songbird!!! And hey, that’s a small thing to ask of a friend!

  4. Hi Marianne,
I am so glad you posted this. You are right. There is no customer service for Feedburner issues AT ALL. I just went from blogspot to .net and was trying to figure out if I had to move my feed or what I was supposed to do with it. I had NO clue what I was doing. I was getting an error message that my file was too large. I did a search for what that meant and how to fix it. I found one and it was resolved. The next day my feed readers had gone from 235 to 20. I still have no clue how to resolve that or what happened. I would love to post about it, but I don’t even know what to say happened. Thank you for posting this because I don’t feel quite as alone now.

You are worth it! :) I’m getting the message, but I re-subscribed thru GFC and it should be ok….if not, I’ll track you down! I love the vintage photos!

  6. Hmmm, volgens mij heb ik deze feed al. Ik hou het wel ff in de gaten ;-)
    Komt helemaal goed!

  7. Oh my goodness….I must live under a stone. I thought Feedburner was the best…I did all the research before I started my blog 10 months ago. Grrr…. And going away? What’s up with that? Oh my….I just got my subscribers built up nicely….and to think I have to start over. Double Grrrrr. I love blogging….dislike all this mind-numbing techy stuff that makes this all work.
I love your vintage photos…they are hilarious!!!
    Blessings!
