Hi there, before I managed to lose the whole month of May, April went out with a bang. We made a great trip to our most favorite city in the whole world, New York City. So it is only over a month late, (but who is counting) but let me show you why I love that city so much.
Here are 10 reasons to love New York City.
Even if you have never been to NYC before, this city will feel familiar to you. So many landmarks are there that are part of our collective memory. Anyone with a TV can picture the Empire State building, Lady Liberty or the Brooklyn Bridge with their eyes closed. New York city has the most iconic skyline in the world. When you drive up to Manhattan from the airport it greats you from a distance, and for us, that moment feels a bit like a home coming. NYC is a jungle of concrete, but what a jungle it is. The city couldn’t be more different from the relaxed provincial town I call home, and yet it feels familiar and known.
NYC is exhausting and invigorating at the same time. I aways need a month sleep afterwards and yet come back so energized and inspired too. They say this city never sleeps. I don’t know if that is really true, because I sure need my sleep while I am there. The busy streets, the crazy traffic, the sheer amount of people, the vibe, the atmosphere it all has a heartbeat and a rythm of its own. I always feel like I am in the center of ‘things’ when I am in New York. As if this is the place to be where news is being made, trends are set and styles are invented. Might be an exaggeration, but this city sure works hard.
You can get food at every street corner in New York, and on the blocks in between those corners too. And since the whole world lives in New York, you can get your breakfast in Israel, your lunch in Italy and your dinner in China. Oh and don’t forget about the coffee too. New Yorkers seem to be born with a phone in one hand and a giant cup of coffee in the other. No wonder this city has so much buzz, everyone is on a caffeine high. Anyway, if you love food, you’ll love New York. There is a taste for everyone there.
You knew the shopping had to be high on my list, didn’t you. Both my man and I love to shop. And if there is any place where you can ‘shop till you drop’ it is NYC. From the giant, biggest department stores, to the most crazy little specialized shops, you’ll find it all here. And for a city of concrete, NYC has an impressive amount of parks, where there are farmer markets or flea markets every day of the week. Window shopping along fifth avenue – taking a picture of yourself having breakfast at Tiffany’s – should be on anybody’s bucket list. And that is just the tip of your shopping Valhalla. Bring a full purse (or credit card) and jump in and shop and shop and shop.
One short time in history New York, was called New Amsterdam, Harlem comes from Haarlem and Brooklyn is the english way to say Breukelen. There are Dutch roots in New York city, so this city feels a bit like ‘our city’ too. It has come a long way from those early days though and now this city is the historical landmark for so many cultures in America. For someone living in a town where the Romans used to roam, NYC is still only a toddler in terms of longevity. But this city moves so fast that she makes history in double speed . The stories about the immigrants, the building of the sky scrapers, the financial crises 1, 2 and 3 and the glory days of theater and film are just a small part of New York’s rich history and proof of how it shaped the world.
Visit New York City and you visit the world. One of the things I absolutely love the most is the fact that when you walk down an avenue, you are walking across the world. Every few blocks the energy of the city changes. One moment you are among the rich and famous who are shopping for a new Chanel bag, the next you are surrounded by business men in suits, only to walk into an Italian village, that is sitting next to China town, which of course is only a few steps away from very hip and happening trendy SOHO. So many cultures are living together in this city and they all have their own little corner carved out. When you visit NYC leave your pretty pumps at home. Put on the most comfortable shoes you have and start walking. Walking the world.
The New Yorkers
I love to people watch on any day, but never more than when I am in New York. Get a coffee, find a bench, sit down to rest your tired feet for a while and just watch the people walking by. Everybody is working so hard in NY and yet they all seem to be roaming the streets at the same time. Young girls with yoga mats and fruit smoothies, Wall street guys with a phone and a coffee, posh ladies with a chihuahua and a handbag, tourists with a camera and a map, young dudes with a baseball cap and a skate board. Old, young, rich and poor, in every shape, size or color, they are all walking the streets of NYC and are there for you to enjoy.
NYC is big. NYC is loud. NYC has a lot. NYC has a lot of everything. Whether you are a sports fan, or a history buff, whether you love art or science, whether you are into shopping or admiring architecture, NYC will have a bounty for you to enjoy. There is so much to do, and so many variations of everything that one lifetime is not enough to take it all in. Just one museum is too big to visit completely in one day, and there are hundreds of them…. New York has you coming back for more and more, because there is always something that was on your list but you didn’t have time for. Why do you think I have visited New York 8 times already, and I’m already plotting my next visit……
NYC is everybody’s favorite coffee bar (Central Perk ring a bell), favorite book store (Someone got mail today), favorite toy store, theater and oh murder scene too. Even if you have never been here before, you will have memories of NYC. When you walk the streets here, you will undoubtedly walk into at least one film set on your way. Times Square and the Broadway theater district are just the most alive little place on the world. Neon lights glitter, theaters beckon and the people are in the mood for a party. New York is where memories are being made. Both real ones and imaginary ones. You just gotta make some memories of your own here.
Need more convincing that I love NYC? Got any lingering doubts whether it is the city for you? Well just get yourself over there and find out for yourself. New York City is an experience everyone should have at least once in their life. This city has is all, and it isn’t afraid to say so. Have fun in NYC!
