My Chandelier Makeover ~ I Got it Done!

Yes ladies, I Gittered something Done! I have light in my life again! My attic is a really dark place at night, and the ground is more often than not scattered with various objects, projects and junk. So these past few months it was more than a bit dangerous to walk in here at night, hot latte in one hand, random stuff in the other and navigate my way to the other side of the room in the dark.

But no more. With the flick of a switch there is light again.

Can I hear a Hallelujah!

Last week I asked your advice on what to do with this chandelier I found thrifting. Thanks to everyone who chipped in, it was very helpful [NOT] Knipogende emoticonCause you all weren’t exactly unanimous in your advice!

So in the end I still had to figure it out myself…. Ah well, I am far to opinionated to follow someone else’s advice anyway (you did know that, now didn’t you, I am always looking for the long way home Wie, ik?).

Ok then, this is what I turned that brassy, shiny thing into:

Not too bad he.

And for your memory, here is the before one more time.

And the after:

In the end I sort of came up with a finish in a trial and error kind of way (like with most of my projects). I really wanted a white finish on the brass but I knew that painting her white would look awful in contrast with the porcelain bits. So I kind of whitewashed her with a dry brush.

I still thought the white was too stark so I very lightly rubbed some dark brown furniture wax over it. That really took the shine out of the still exposed brass bits too. And then it was several times: rinse and repeat.

Chandelier Makeover Music Paper

The plastic tubes were brand new and looked awful on it, so I opted for covering them with some vintage music paper.

Originally there were only six crystals on this chandelier, but I thought she deserved a bit more bling.

I found these ghastly lamps last year at a flea market?

Chrystal lamp before

Well the lamps no longer exist, but the crystals got rewired into one long chain.

Much better, if I say so myself.

Chandelier Makeover 4

I procrastinated for six month on this project, and in the end it only cost me two hours from start to finish. Oh why do we do this to ourselves!?

Anyway I am so glad I Gitter Done! my chandelier.

Have you been working on long overdue projects? Remember tomorrow is Gitter Done! day here. I will post my GD post tomorrow night and you can link up all weekend.

Ah, chandy, you are the light of my life.
