Hi there, welcome to day 2 of my Christmas decorations that we shall not name Christmas decorations just yet (and if you don’t get this joke, you’ll have to read yesterday’s post about my advent decoration).
So I guess I have another winter decoration for you.
Ice flowers!
Are you ‘old’ enough to remember real ice flowers on your windows? I am. When I was a little girl we still had bedroom windows that weren’t insulated, and when it was really cold there would be ice flowers in the morning. I rarely see them anymore these days. I guess ice flowers are becoming extinct. I kind of miss them. Although I don’t miss those cold and drafty windows.
So I decided to bring ice flowers back within the comfort of my well insulated house.
See!? Flowers on my windows.
There are even some flowers dangling in front of the windows.
Want to know how I did it?
It was quite easy. For the flowers on the window panes I stuck doilies on the window and then sprayed faux snow from a can over them. The little doily I stuck to the window by simply wetting it, and since I needed to rinse it every other time anyway that was easy. The bigger doilies were to heavy to stay put with only water so I sprayed some faux snow on them first and used that as a kind of glue.
Spray lightly over them, too thick and it will look too fake. But as long as the snow hasn’t dried you can easily wash it away and do it over.
The dangling doilies where stiffened with sugar water (like I did with my lace napkin rings) and hung with very fine craft wire.
It is easy, I promise!
This looks so cute in real life. All festive and wintery. And it makes for amazing shadows when the sun is shining through.
So what’s the verdict? Christmas or winter decorations?
I think it qualifies for both.
This was a nice and cheap craft too. The doilies came from my stash (the little round ones are actually part of a crochet table runner I cut up) and can always be reused if I wash the sugar out of them. And the spray snow was very cheap too. I used one can for all four of the windows I treated.
Hmm, use what I have, easy, cheap, lovely with a bit of a wow factor. My kind of Christmas decorating.
Now what shall I do tomorrow?
Well I guess you’ll have to come back and see.

Hi Marianne, Your snow flowers are so pretty and creative. I remember the real snow flowers on the windows. In fact I still have a couple of windows that will have them when the weather gets really really cold. Somewhere in my photo archives I have pictures of them.
Looking forward to your next project.

That was lovely! I miss the snow flowers as well. This winter has been so warm so far. We only got a thin layer of snow on sunday and luckily it's still there. The children are missing the snow as well, Tuli begged that Johan would scrape up some snow for him so he could make a snowman, mission impossible 🙂

This project made me nostalgic for an old uninsulated apartment where we lived in Vermont. Could I use paper doilies instead of cloth?

We hadden tot voor de vorige winter ijsbloemen op de voordeur. Brrr. Niet voor mij! Gelukkig houdt de nieuwe voordeur de kou buiten.
Maar jouw ijslbloemen zijn erg mooi! Leuk idee!

How lovely Marianne! Just tonight I was at the Dollar Tree and saw the spray snow. I picked it up and almost bought it. Then I thought, "No, I don't have anything specific to use it for." Now I could kick myself.
See what happens when I try to be practical? This would be so cute in my kitchen window. Guess who will be stopping by the Dollar Tree again later this week!
