I have been working on another room in my house lately. The bedroom is currently the room who is getting the most attention. The bedroom was fully functional from the day when I moved in. I added the proper furniture: new bed, new closets, ‘new’ old bed stands, repurposed old dresser, and that was it. A functional but nowhere near a pretty room. And it stayed like that for a long time.
Until I decided that I might not have the time to do a whopping one room in a month challenge but that I could chip away at the projects that I had in my mind for this room. And now one corner is ready and decorated and it gives the whole room some much needed identity.
Bedroom decorating eclectic style
As in every room I started with finishing those last ‘not fun but needs to be done projects’, like painting the ceiling, baseboards, door and door frame and the radiator. I used bright sparkly white for all of them. Now that I had my proper canvas I started to add character. I chose to paint part of a wall in a medium dark grey. I love how that worked out. It gives interest to the room and provides some contrast for my painted white dresser. And then I started adding layers to that little corner.
I borrowed just about every mirror I had in my house and gave them all a fresh coat of white spray paint and grouped them together. I am no longer really into the vintage look anymore but I still like it in moderation. My taste has moved to a bit more casual modern, beachy, boho look. But since the bohemian look is really a very eclectic look, I feel I can get away with reusing old pieces of furniture and decor. Eclectic is such a wonderful word isn’t it. “Oh darling I know those two things don’t really go together, but I am striving for an eclectic look, you know!” 🙂
Neon Love Lamp
A contrast with my vintage mirrors is my LIEFDE neon lamp. Liefde is the Dutch word for love. I am so glad that lamp finally got its proper place. I remember buying it about three years ago. It wasn’t that long after the big break up and I was still living in that tiny, temporary apartment. I spent a lot of time on the couch there, mindlessly scrolling social media sites while contemplating why my life had changed so fundamentally and how would I ever bounce back. Then one day I saw that lamp in someones Instagram feed and it stopped me in my tracks. Now mind you, I wasn’t at all sure I would ever be ready to let my guard down again and let love back into my life. Heck I was quite sure I wouldn’t, it felt way to unsafe and dangerous to my broken heart. But somewhere I knew I wanted too…
And that is what that lamp started to mean to me. I bought it on a whim there and then and then I tucked it away. I wasn’t ready for it. I came across it several times since moving to the new house, but I never found the perfect spot for it, it never felt right, I never felt ready. Until I did.
There definitely is a lot of love in my life again. My heart has mended and has filled up again and love is pouring out of it again. And now that lamp is hanging proud in my bedroom, a testament to my faith in ‘de liefde’.
How to hang things from the ceiling temporarily
I had been collecting paper balloons for some time and they finally found there place too. I took me a while to figure out how to hang things temporarily from the ceiling in such a way that I wouldn’t end up with lots of unsightly hooks and holes in my concrete ceilings. But when I found it those balloons were up in moments. I found the perfect little gizmos to hang something that isn’t too heavy from the ceiling and that can be removed without a trace again too. I used those little discs with a hook and a sticky backing. Fishing line is perfect to hang the balloons because you can’t see it from below and it makes the balloons look like they are floating.

After I had finally solved my ‘how to hang things temporarily from the ceiling’ problem, the rest was easy sailing. All I had to do was figure out how to style the top of my dresser.
As you can see I went with a minimalistic look. I added some long lasting flowers and faux coral on one side. And a tray with some faux greens and my favorite perfumes on the other. With all that is going on with the mirrors, Neon Lamp and the floating paper balloons I felt the dresser should stay somewhat understated. And it works.
I keep my jewelry and scarfs in the drawers of that dresser and now it has become the perfect spot to put the finishing touches to my outfit.
Choose the right earrings,
wrap a scarf around my neck,
spritz a bit of perfume,
one last look in the mirror and I am ready for the day…
One corner of the room done.
Let’s move on to the next…..

Isn’t it a nice feeling to start getting these little corners completed to perfection? I took the opportunity to go back and look at some of your other bedroom tweaks, (In the You Might Like This Too section at the bottom of the page) and remembered that I loved them all. If this little corner is anything to go by, I know when you have this whole room the way you want it, it is going to be wonderful! Can’t wait to see it.
I’ve been living in my little cottage for almost two years now, and it has taken me almost that long to figure out what I wanted to do as opposed to what I thought I wanted to do. It took me that long to get over what I thought I wanted, but wouldn’t do, to finally understand what the room wanted and I’m finally moving forward. Now, if I only had the time to do it! : )
You are always an inspiration.

Hi Donna,
Thank you for your confidence in me! If only finishing rooms didn’t take me this long… Ah well, life is what happens when you make plans I guess.
Good for you that you have figured out what to do with your cottage. My plans have changed along the way too. I came in with my old style and realized it had changed quite a bit now that I was in a totally different house. We’ll just keep plotting along then, shall we.

I like your new look. It suits you! The new you! I feel like my night stand dressers need a refresh too.

Thank you, sweet Gwen. Giving something a refresh always feels good and it is just fun.

Mooi Marianne. Zal wel moeilijk te fotograferen zijn geweest, met al dat wit.

Dank je!
Fijn dat je dat opmerkt. Was niet geheel eenvoudig maar door het grijze contrast viel het ook wel weer mee.
