Goodday friends and soon to be friends, today is a special day because there is a little special light shining on me. I am Hometalk blogger of the week so I am in the Hometalk spotlight, the bloglight.
If you don’t know Hometalk you are missing out. Hometalk is a place to share your best DIY and Home decorating projects and to not only find oodles of inspiration for your home, but also help and advice from professionals and amateur experts alike. It is a bit like Pinterest but without the infographics and the cupcake recipes.
And they have a great Facebook Page too…..
Who would have thought I’d land myself in this particular light. I may have been blogging for almost five years now but I still regard myself as an amateur in every way.
I started my blog on a whim, after having stumbled onto some home and craft blogs while surfing the internet. I had just created a little Spring decoration in my living room and I thought “I can do that, I can share it on the internet too”.
Back then I blogged in Dutch which made perfect sense, since I am Dutch and live in the Netherlands. Then some foreigners stumbled onto my blog and I was amazed. So to welcome them I started to translate my posts in English too. I kept up the bilingual blogging for a couple of years. Until it wore me out and now I blog in English only. Good thing most people in the world understand a bit of English, and looking at pretty pictures is a global pastime.
One of my most popular posts: How to make plaster roses
My blog is a bit about everything. My adventures in DIY, creating decorative corners in my house, dressing the table, crafting, gardening and yes even a bit about cooking. I guess I just can’t decide which way to go, I like it all way too much. Blogging is still a part time thing for me. In my daily professional life I work as an social researcher at an University for Applied Science. I guess you can say blogging makes me a whole person. It completes my rational, and left sided brain with a creative outlet that challenges the right part of my brain. Combining a professional career, a blog that could easily take up another workweek and a family and social life, is not easy. I guess it is the main reason that I have never been able to maintain a proper blogging schedule. I have a schedule, mind you, I just never stick to it 😕
The project I am the most proud of is my Billy built-in bookcase and the complete guest room makeover that was inspired by it. I love this project, maybe not so much because it is the most original project out there, but because it was my first big one. It was a real challenge for me and I learned a ton of things by just starting and doing it and figuring everything out along the way. Projects like this show me – and hopefully my readers too – that you can learn anything, if you just have the courage to start trying. I need to remind myself of that daily.
My latest big and multi-project room reveal: my craft room makeover.
Blogging has brought me so much: a creative outlet, a fire under my butt to start and do something, international friends, a desire to learn new skills and a whole new set of hobbies that have taken over my life. I can’t imagine not blogging anymore. It ain’t always easy and it definitely is not always smooth sailing, but my blog has changed me to the core and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Thanks for coming along on this ride with me. And thank you Hometalk for shining your awesome light on me today.
