Hi there, friends and companions in all things blog and decorating. And blogging about decorating. I have had a great weekend, the sun was out, the rain stayed (mostly) away, I worked a bit in the garden, my Love and I went out to dinner across the border and I played in the nest. Today I had the house to myself, my knight in shining black armor rode away on his 134 black stallions (aka his motorbike) and left me to play. Playing decorator and stylist and with all that freedom the fun old sport of table setting was first on my list.
Some time ago I painted some small bottles white and I was itching to use them. I also wanted something cheerful and fun, and something feeling like summer. So I wandered a bit around the house, moving from room to room, white bottle in hand. Holding it up to some books, yarn, candles, fabric, flowers. Whatever came to mind, waiting for something to catch my eye and spark that little light of inspiration.
And then I saw this little blue lantern in the shed, and it clicked. Polka dots! What could be more fun and happy than some polka dots. I remembered that somewhere in the disaster that my craft room is right now, I was supposed to have a package of blue sticky polka dots. To my own surprise I found them immediately.
And then I sat down and started sticking blue polka dots to white painted bottles.
Most be the most utterly useless thing to do in this world. Sit quietly on my porch and sticking little blue polka dots onto white painted bottles. Useless, I know, but utterly fulfilling and relaxing. Quieted down the racing mind and soothed my aching back. So I guess the polka dotting of the bottles had a use after all.
The little stickers didn’t stick so well to the bottles, I guess they won’t last long. But that is okay, they’ll last long enough for this table setting and then I’ll move on and use my bottles elsewhere.
As blue and white was the theme of the day, I just kept adding, white candles, blue glass, a white plate, clear bottles filled with blue water (food coloring), and the most ‘blue’ flowers I could find in my garden. And then I started snapping. Photographing from every angle. I had to preserve this table setting because I knew full well, that 15 minutes after the man got home, everything would be shoved to the side. Maybe, just maybe, I would get a “that looks nice” first, maybe not, but no doubt within minutes everything would be piled up together to make room for the reading of the newspaper, or the cleaning of the armor, or the laying of two feet.
But that’s okay. This table is there to be used and enjoyed. And I had my kick already anyway, just playing around and unleashing my inner decorator, with white bottles and blue polka dots.
So do you ever decorate your table, knowing full well it won’t last longer than until the pictures have been taken? And do you agree that there isn’t a color combination that is more summer than blue and white? And do you think too, that a bit of polka dot makes everything better?

Looks beautiful and yes, blue and white are definitely summer colors! I think they always look cool and crisp.

I hear you on the decorations not lasting long once your husband comes home.
The only time of year I ever try to decorate my table is for Christmas. A tablecloth and a centerpiece of some sort is all I ever manage.
Since my husband really hates tablecloths, every time we sit down to eat, the cloth and the centerpiece are set aside until the meal is done. It’s also not unusual for me to get up in the morning to find the tablecloth pushed off to one side because he was up during the night for a snack.
It’s a pain but from Dec 1st until Dec 31st but I want something nice on the table for the holidays.
I’m sure if I decorated the table with bulldozer parts and piles of dirt and stone he wouldn’t mind. Maybe I’ll try that for a summer theme sometime and see how it goes.

My partner and I absolutely love your blog and find many of your post’s to be just what I’m looking for. Do you offer guest writers to write content for you personally? I wouldn’t mind producing a post or elaborating on some of the subjects you write concerning here. Again, awesome web site!
