If you’ve ever wished your windows could look like they’ve been kissed by winter (without the actual cold) this is for you. In this post, I’m sharing one of my favorite snow spray window ideas: how to make delicate, faux ice flowers using nothing more than lace doilies and a can of snow spray. It’s a simple DIY snowy window project that brings back that old-fashioned frost-on-the-glass magic, only cozier and far easier to clean up. Think handmade Christmas charm, soft light, and a touch of nostalgia — all created with things you probably already have at home.

It started with a memory.

A cold morning. Frost on the windows.

And those magical, fleeting patterns, ice flowers.

If you’re old enough, you might remember them too.

Back before double glazing and central heating took over, winter mornings meant peeking through foggy glass to find lace-like frost crystals blooming overnight. Every pane was a surprise. Every window, a winter painting.

I used to press my fingertips against the glass, watching the frost melt just a little. The tiny sparkles would vanish, and I’d wish I hadn’t touched it. Those ice flowers felt alive, like they belonged to some secret world that only appeared when you were asleep.

These days? My windows stay warm, clear, and utterly boring. Cozy, yes. But magic-free.

So one year, I decided to bring the ice flowers back, without the frostbite.

How to Decorate Windows With Snow Spray – Recreating Ice Flowers

Here’s the thing: real ice flowers might be gone, but faux ones are totally possible. All you need is a can of snow spray, a few lace doilies, and a touch of patience.

This project is as easy as it is beautiful, my favorite kind of holiday decorating.

I started with clean windows (trust me, that step matters more than you think). Then I pressed small doilies right onto the glass. The little ones stick just fine if you dampen them with a bit of water. The larger ones? They need a bit more persuasion, a light mist of snow spray works surprisingly well as a temporary glue.

Once the doilies were in place, I gave everything a gentle, even coat of snow spray. Not too heavy, the trick is restraint. Too much, and it turns from delicate frost to full-on blizzard.

When you peel the doilies away (before the spray fully dries), you’re left with the prettiest window snowflakes you’ve ever seen, lacey, intricate, and softly blurred around the edges.

It’s the kind of thing that makes you stop mid-sentence when the light hits just right.

Hanging Frost Flowers for Extra Sparkle

The fun didn’t stop there.

Some of my doilies were too beautiful to waste, so I stiffened them with sugar water. Just like I did for my vintage doily ornaments years ago. Once dry, they held their shape perfectly. A little fine craft wire, a few discreet hooks, and suddenly I had dangling frost flowers floating in front of my snowy windows.

When the morning sun came through, they cast the most incredible shadows, like snowflakes caught mid-dance.

It was whimsical. Nostalgic. A little bit of Christmas magic on an ordinary day.

Why I Love This DIY Snowy Window Project

What is there not to like about a little Christmas craft like this? You gotta love it…

  • Because it’s easy.
  • Because it’s cheap.
  • Because it feels like stepping into an old fairy tale.

I used one can of spray snow for four windows. The doilies came from my craft stash, some even cut from an old crochet table runner. Everything else I already had on hand.

There’s something deeply satisfying about creating something so charming from almost nothing.
Homemade. Handmade. Heart-made.

And honestly, isn’t that what Christmas decor should be about?

Other Snow Spray Window Ideas

If you want to take your project a step further, there are endless snow spray window ideas to try.

  • Use stencils – stars, snowflakes, or Christmas trees – for crisp, graphic designs.
  • Trace letters for cozy messages like “Let It Snow” or “Merry & Bright.”
  • Add a soft dusting of spray snow around the edges of a window to instantly create that frosted, wintry feel without much effort.

Pair your DIY snowy windows with twinkle lights, paper snowflakes, or garlands, and you’ve got a scene that looks straight out of a Christmas storybook.

Nostalgic Ice Flowers on Windows

Maybe ice flowers really are disappearing.

But with a little imagination – and a can of snow spray – we can keep their spirit alive.

This year when I hung my frost flowers and saw that delicate pattern against the glass, I felt like a kid again. Waiting for snow. Watching the light shift. Believing, just a little, in winter magic.

So go on, grab some doilies and a can of spray snow. Let’s make our own frost.

Hi Marianne, Your snow flowers are so pretty and creative. I remember the real snow flowers on the windows. In fact I still have a couple of windows that will have them when the weather gets really really cold. Somewhere in my photo archives I have pictures of them.
Looking forward to your next project.

That was lovely! I miss the snow flowers as well. This winter has been so warm so far. We only got a thin layer of snow on sunday and luckily it's still there. The children are missing the snow as well, Tuli begged that Johan would scrape up some snow for him so he could make a snowman, mission impossible 🙂

This project made me nostalgic for an old uninsulated apartment where we lived in Vermont. Could I use paper doilies instead of cloth?

  16. We hadden tot voor de vorige winter ijsbloemen op de voordeur. Brrr. Niet voor mij! Gelukkig houdt de nieuwe voordeur de kou buiten.

How lovely Marianne! Just tonight I was at the Dollar Tree and saw the spray snow. I picked it up and almost bought it. Then I thought, "No, I don't have anything specific to use it for." Now I could kick myself.

See what happens when I try to be practical? This would be so cute in my kitchen window. Guess who will be stopping by the Dollar Tree again later this week!
