Hello my friends!

This weekend, I went on a mission…

One of those missions only a woman who needs a Christmas tree can understand. I logged a Christmas tree home all by myself, and not just any tree…

the biggest Christmas tree I’ve ever had. She dominates my living room in all her shiny and light splendor, and she is decked out in white. Yes, this is a Christmas tree with white ornaments, many of them homemade, giving my home that cozy Nordic Christmas tree vibe I’ve been dreaming about.

Hunting for the Perfect Nordic Christmas Tree

I wanted a tree that was big, luscious, and gorgeous—a tree that would make my living room feel like a winter wonderland. After some research, I found the best Christmas tree dealer a couple of villages over. This man grows and digs up his own trees with his two hands. I was ready at 8 AM sharp, well, almost. I got a little lost in the outback but arrived at 8:30.

“Which tree do you want?” he asked.
I said, “Big and beautiful.”
And then he showed me her. Some other trees were nice, but my tree had already sold me. or should I say, she had sold me.

Soon she was on her way home in the boot of my car, sticking out like a wild, green crown jewel. I’ve never driven with my boot door open before, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

Me vs. Giant Tree: The Ultimate Setup

I got my giant of a tree home.

Did I say she is big? Well, hmm I’m not, I am rather petite-ish, in height that is (nothing petite about my curves).  To say that she is heavy is an understatement…

The tree dealer had sawed a bit off of her trunk, to give her a fresh cut so she could drink. I was told to put her in a bucket with water.

I was home alone. Me and my giant tree where home alone and she was thirsty. So was I by the way, but the tea had to wait. First I had to give my big baby girl her drink.

Hmm, how do you get a giant tree in a tiny bucket all by yourself?

Well, by being resourceful. I first wanted to do it inside. She was so heavy I was glad I got her through the door, I didn’t see myself carrying her through the house to the back.

So I got the bucket, I sorta leaned her against the wall and then stood there staring. How on earth was I going to lift her high enough to hover over the bucket. A bucket full of water. A bucket I couldn’t see when I would be trying to balance this tree.

I had visions of the bucket spilling all that water over my floor and me being swallowed up by the tree.

Time for plan B.

There had to be a plan B, I was on a mission…..

I dragged her out anyway. From the hallway, to the living room, steep curve into the kitchen, through the kitchen, careful not to swipe my open kitchen shelves clear of my china and out the back door.

I found a bigger bucket. I positioned it in a corner. I dragged the tree in exactly the position so that her stem was hovering over that bucket.

I lifted her up. The tree stump perfectly sliding into the bucket. She was standing.

I raised my arms, stumped my feet and cried victory.

I had done it. All by myself. Woman on a mission, hear me roar!

Oh, by the way are you seeing my adorable white Christmas ornaments. How do you like the lacy ones that look like snowflakes? Yeah, those are handmade by me. Go here to learn how to make the little doily ornaments.

I went back in to see the destruction she had left behind. I had just got the broom out when I heard a big clash.

Oops she had tipped over. All that water running over my terrace (thank goodness I took this business outside).

So once more I did my positioning and lifting trick, and this time I made sure she leaned in the direction of the wall.

I gave her time to drink, while I cleaned up the mess and made myself that cup of tea I had been yearning for.

And that evening, I brought her inside (with the help of the man this time), and after some major detangling of the lights, the decorating could begin.

Decorating My Christmas Tree with White Ornaments

I pulled out all of my white Christmas ornaments to create a Nordic Christmas tree vibe.

I used my vintage doily ornaments that look like snowflakes and the white felt puppet ornaments I made some time ago.

There are also lots of wooden stars in the tree. That was a double whammy Christmas project.

I painted a slap of leftover plywood white, then I sawed white Christmas stars from the wood. Next I sawed smaller stars out from the middle of those stars. Now I got two stars for the price of one.

She sort of evolved into this elegant Christmas tree with white ornaments.

I hid all cords of the Christmas tree lights in a basket with pine cones.

It adds a nice rustic touch to this Christmas tree decorated in white.

I remember taking a shot like this one above last year. I was hating the contrast between my dark hutch and my light tree then. This year I am loving the friendship between my tree and my freshly painted hutch. Perfect way to end a year of DIY-ing and decorating.

Oh and that NOEL Christmas banner you see hanging on my hutch in the background. That is a homemade project too. Find my NOEL banner here.

Yeah, it was quite an adventure to bring her home, but she is worth it.

  1. Ohhhh what a beauty! That is EXACTLY the kind of tree I want! Loved your story… I imagine mine will be very similar. We have to chop it down ourselves too… yikes!

  2. You did it and I was cheering for you all the way!

  3. There is nothing like a real tree and I can’t imagine the day I’ll have to resort to a fake one. Hopefully that day never comes! Even if I have to haul it in myself like you did! What a great idea to do a basket of cones. My tree stand is large and slightly ugly, so that would be nice to put under there until we can toss a few presents there.

  4. Hi Marianne, what a wonderful description of your ‘fun’ tree experience. You can be very proud of you and her as she is very pretty all dressed up and ready for Christmas. Blessings and smiles, Emilou 🙂

  5. Wat een gigantische boom en een leuk verhaal! Ans
